Homework: Students are encouraged to bring in a canvas for the Portrait of an Ecosystem assignment. Please note: THIS IS OPTIONAL! Science Fair: Tri folds have been handed out and some groups are beginning to start putting information on them. Please speak with your child about where they are in process. Upcoming: No school on Friday, Dec.8th.
Students will be starting their Portrait of an Ecosystem assignments soon for Interactions and Ecosystems. Students have the option of painting this on a canvas if they would like. These are available at the dollar store. We will providing alternatives if they do not have a canvas. STRUCTURAL FAIL VIDEO (Tuesday, Nov.28th - in class 7C and 7B) Watch the video below. As you are watching, jot down the reasons why these structures failed and what should have been done to fix them. Math Last Week: Students have been working on integers. There are some extra practice sheets linked below. Students in 7C and 7B should be completed up to 2.4 in their booklets (or on printed sheets). Students in 7D and 7E have been working on 2.1 and 2.2. This week: Students in 7A will be writing the integer quiz on Tuesday, November 28th. Students in 7B, C, D and E will continue their work on integers including adding and subtracting on number lines. They will be also be working on solving integer word problems.
Science
Last Week: All groups presented their House of Learning projects. This Week: Classes will be wrapping up the Structures and Forces Unit. Our next unit is Interactions and Ecosystems and we will be working on a cross curricular project with Humanities. Science Fair: There will be only 5 more Friday's for students to work on their science fair projects. The trifolds have arrived so groups can start putting together their information to place on the trifolds. Please talk with your child about their project as many students are behind and will need extra time at home to finish. Have a great weekend! Math and Science: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week were dedicated to the House of Learning project. This is a cross-curricular project with Humanities where students have been working in groups to build a First Nations structure and also use scientific language to explain it. Homework: Students need to review their notes and the questions attached below to be prepared for their presentation on Monday, November 20th.
Math Last Week: Students were working on Unit 2: Integers and we learned different strategies for adding integers on a number line and using tiles. Students reviewed zero pairs and also brainstormed words that are associated with negative integers (down, decrease, loss, withdrawl, drop, etc) and positive integers (increase, gain, deposit, up, etc). This Week: Students will be learning how to subtract integers using the KFC method (keep the first integer, flip the sign from minus to plus and change the second integer). Students can then use the same techniques we used to solve addition integers including number lines and algebra tiles. Homework: 7B and 7C students need to have their math quizzes signed for Monday, November 13th. Problem Solving: This seems to be an area that students struggle with. Attached are several integer word problems for students to try at home. If they want to get them marked, please have them show them to their teacher.
Science Last Week: Students reviewed their Topic 1/3 quiz. Please ask to see these. We introduced students to our House of Learning project. This project is a cross curricular project based on the information students learned in Humanities about a First Nations group. In groups, students will research the particular structure of their First Nations group. Each student has been assigned a role within the group. This Week: Groups will have 3 days to build a prototype of their structure - either a wigwam, teepee, pit house, igloo or longhouse. They will use authentic materials to build their structure and will be able to explain both the science behind their structures (forces, type of structure, design features) as well as the Humanities questions including details about their way of life, beliefs, etc. Their research needs to be detailed and accurate! They will only have 3 days to build and get their presentations ready. The assignment is attached below.
Math
Last Week - Students wrote the final quiz for Unit 1: Patterns and Relations. Please watch for these quizzes to come home to get signed next week. Help us to celebrate all of the great learning and assist where there are learning gaps. The Grade 7 math teachers are available at lunchtimes for extra help and are happy to work with any student who needs some assistance! Next Week - We are starting Unit 2: Integers. We will start by doing a quick review of what an integer is (positive or negative whole number, including zero!). Students will review the concept of zero pairs and will use red and yellow tiles to represent positive and negative integers. This week will be all about adding integers using tiles and on a number line. Projects Coming Up - Money Matters: Budgeting your Money With Integers. Students will practice integers with a real life scenario. They will need to add and subtract integers based on whether they have spent or saved money. They will keep track of this for 4 weeks. At the end, they will analyze their spending habits and decide if they need to revise their habits! Games to Play at Home: A fun integer activity. Take a deck of cards and remove face cards. Red cards are negative, black are positive. Give each player 2 cards. The player finds the sum of the two cards. If a player has a sum of 0, they are out. Each remaining player takes 1 card from the deck. Add this number to the previous sum. Any player with a total of 0 is out. Play continues until 1 player remains. That player is the winner. Science Last Week: Students in 7A, B and C wrote a science quiz on Topics 1, 2 and 3 in the Structures and Forces Unit. Students in 7D and E will write this quiz on Monday, November 6th. Next week: We will be beginning our House of Learning Project which is a cross curricular activity with Humanities. Students will be building one of three structures of the First Nations: wigwam, tee pee or longhouse. They will need to know what materials they used, how they put it together (joints) and the function of their structures (permanent, moveable, climate, etc). In Humanities, students will be researching their particular group to make authentic connections between their structure and way of life. Science quizzes will also be returned next week and will need to be signed and returned. Science Fair: We have been working on the science fair projects on Fridays and only have 7 more Fridays until they are due on Jan.16th. Please speak with your child about their project, what their question is, how their research/experiment is going. There are some very interesting topics that students have chosen and we are excited for the final results! Stay warm and have a wonderful weekend! |
