Math: Last Week: All grade 7 students have started the Fractions, Decimal and Percent unit. We looked at the differences between terminating and repeating decimals, made a foldable that will help students convert between each and are starting to place numbers on a number line. This week: Students will be placing fractions on a number line. We will be starting with fractions that have the same denominator, then moving to fractions with different denominators. Then we will be looking at a set of fractions, decimals and percents and students will have to determine how they can place them on a number line. This will correspond with activity 3.2 in the booklets. ***Remember there are extra practice sheets attached from last week. Science: Last Week: Students in 7B and 7C finished their portraits of an ecosystem. The other classes have a few finishing touches on them. This Week: We will be moving on to water and carbon cycles. Students will be watching some videos and then will be recreating the water cycle in their visual journal using the following vocabulary: precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, condensation, run-off, and ground water. They will do the same for the carbon cycle and include the vocabulary: photosynthesis, fossil fuels, respiration, decomposition, carbon dioxide, burning of forests. We will also look at bioaccumulation. Science Fair: Congratulations to all of the Grade 7 students for another successful science fair. The top projects chosen to go to cities will be announced this week! Stay tuned.....

Math Last Week: All classes have started Unit 3: Fractions, Decimals and Percents. Students have made a foldable that include instructions and examples on how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents. They are encouraged to use these to help them throughout the unit! This Week: We will be looking at the following concepts: terminating and repeating decimals, simplest form, and comparing and ordering fractions and decimals Homework: 7A needs to have to 3.2 finished on Monday, Jan.22nd. ***This unit contains several outcomes and students are encouraged to review and do extra practice throughout. Extra practice sheets attached below. Science Last Week: Students have been finishing the rough draft of their "Portrait of an Ecosystem" project. They have the sheet of requirements. Students also wrote a Topic 1-3 Quiz and should have them returned and signed next week. This Week: Students will start painting their portraits. If they would like to do this on a canvas, they will need to bring them by Monday, Jan.22nd. Otherwise, they will be provided paper. Students will then need to explain then paintings using the vocabulary from the unit. Homework: 7A Portrait of an Ecosystem notes due on Monday, Jan.22nd Science Fair: Just a reminder that the science fair will be on Thursday, January 25th. Students are being asked to be here at 5:15 and the science fair will be open to the public from 5:30 - 8 pm. We would also ask for students assistance for a few minutes after the science fair for take down. Attached below are sample questions that students will be asked by the judges. We are encouraging them to print them off, write down the answers and practice answering them. We will be doing this next week in preparation as well. Enjoy the video below! Hopefully not too many of you are experiencing this!
Math: On Wednesday, Jan. 17th classes 7B, C, D and E will be writing the Data and Probability Test. Attached below are extra practice sheets with answers. Science: On Monday, Jan. 15th, ALL Grade 7 students will be writing a quiz on Topics 1-3 on Interactions and Ecosystems. Students will need to review the following vocabulary: habitat, needs, adaptations, inherited, learned, sustainable, recycle, ecology, re-use, needs, wants, natural, ecological footprints, reduce, symbiotic relationships, mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, four basic needs of living things, ecosystems Homework: Students should be reviewing for the math quiz by doing the extra practice sheets. Students should reread Topics 1-3 on the blog, as well as review their notes for the science quiz. ***They will need to watch the Waste Avengers video below as well.
Welcome back! Hope everyone had a restful break and are ready to get back to work! Math We left off on the Data and Probability Unit. We will continue this week with some review of mean, mode, median and range. Then we will learn about experimental versus theoretical probabilities. Students will demonstrate their ability to model probability trees and diagrams. There will be a cumulative quiz on this unit next week. Our next unit is Fractions, Percents and Decimals. Homework: Students are handing in their Money Matters assignment on Monday if they didn't do already. Science We finished with the Ecological Footprint (some students are handing in on Monday!) On Monday, students will be working in pairs to dissect an owl pellet to determine what kind of organism(s) it ate. They will gather the bones and reconstruct the organism, as well as answer a series of questions based on an owl's ecosystem. **Check out the informative video below about owl pellets. We will continue studying and discussing vocabulary that students will need to know for the Portrait of an Ecosystem project. These words include: producer, consumer, predator, prey, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, mutualism, commensalism, parasitism. Science Fair: The Science Fair will be held on Thursday, January 25th. Students will set up their projects during the day and the gym will be open to parents and the community that evening from 5:30 - 8pm. We encourage you to come and see all of the creative projects the students have come up with! |
