Math Last Week: Students were working on Unit 2: Integers and we learned different strategies for adding integers on a number line and using tiles. Students reviewed zero pairs and also brainstormed words that are associated with negative integers (down, decrease, loss, withdrawl, drop, etc) and positive integers (increase, gain, deposit, up, etc). This Week: Students will be learning how to subtract integers using the KFC method (keep the first integer, flip the sign from minus to plus and change the second integer). Students can then use the same techniques we used to solve addition integers including number lines and algebra tiles. Homework: 7B and 7C students need to have their math quizzes signed for Monday, November 13th. Problem Solving: This seems to be an area that students struggle with. Attached are several integer word problems for students to try at home. If they want to get them marked, please have them show them to their teacher.
Science Last Week: Students reviewed their Topic 1/3 quiz. Please ask to see these. We introduced students to our House of Learning project. This project is a cross curricular project based on the information students learned in Humanities about a First Nations group. In groups, students will research the particular structure of their First Nations group. Each student has been assigned a role within the group. This Week: Groups will have 3 days to build a prototype of their structure - either a wigwam, teepee, pit house, igloo or longhouse. They will use authentic materials to build their structure and will be able to explain both the science behind their structures (forces, type of structure, design features) as well as the Humanities questions including details about their way of life, beliefs, etc. Their research needs to be detailed and accurate! They will only have 3 days to build and get their presentations ready. The assignment is attached below.
