Last Week: We started off math with a math scavenger hunt! Students needed to solve various math problems and challenges. We also read through the course outline and looked at the supply list. For math, we are asking that students have the following:
- geometry set
- calculator (does not need to be scientific!)
This week: We will be starting with a pre-assessment which will help us determine what areas students are strong in and what areas we need to spend more time at. Then we will be starting Unit 1: Patterns and Relations. Our first topic is divisibility. We will be making a divisibility foldable that students can use throughout the year, as well as completing several activities/games based around divisibility. We will also start looking at algebraic expressions and vocabulary such as variable, numerical coefficient, and constant term.
Math booklets: For the past few years, students have had the option of ordering math booklets. We use them in class to supplement the curriculum and they have been very successful in helping students learning! They cost $15 for a set of 8 booklets. They are also available for printing on the kodiak cave if you choose to do that. We will also have about 4 laminated sets per class that students can use, but they will not be able to take these home. Please contact your child's math teacher if you have any questions about these booklets!
Last Week: We started talking about lab safety. Students have received an introductory booklet and we have completed the first topic on safety.
This week: We will be working through the introductory booklet. We will be learning the WHMIS symbols, practicing converting between units (cm to m), reviewing variables in an experiment and graphing.
Science Fair: We are excited to be running the science fair again this year and super excited that most of the students participated last year. On Friday, we will be completing an activity that will have students thinking about all of the different topics, as well as choose a partner.
